Holograph draft of a letter written to Miguel Becerra constituting a contemporary biography of the Mexican scientist Joaquín Velázquez Cárdenas y León, with detailed technical information on his development of instruments for celestial observations, particularly the transit of Venus in 1769 as observed in Baja California (32 p.). Collection of Mexican manuscripts from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Contains: study of Article 6, Title I, Book 2 of the constitution of the Spanish monarchy (34 p.); observations on the Provision of Mitras, 1830 Feb. 27, concerning the reorganization of the Catholic Church in Mexico under the Republic, and especially the appointment of new bishops and the archbishop (24 p.); letter from Antonio de León y Gama containing a biography of Joaquín Velázquez Cárdenas y León; a Mexican rebuttal of a report sent to the king by Archbishop Lorenzana conerning the inate capacities and abilities of "Mexican creoles" and how to best keep them happy in their place, 1771 May 2 (118 p.); a series of royal decrees concerning the will of a Tlaxcalan Indian named Julian Cirilo de Galicia y Castilla who endowed a fund for the education of Indians in Puebla, and who left his library to the Colegio de San Gregorio (18 p.); a treatise on logic, ca. 1775 (58 p.); manuscript copy of a printed piece (29 p.); copy of a royal order to the Council of Castille, 1804 (6 p.); a rebuttal to an ecclesiastical prohibition, under penalty of excommunication, against attending masked balls; and a petition seeking a marriage annulment, 1825 Sept. 25.
